CPIA 2021: Togo maintains progress, despite covid-19

POSTED ON MONDAY, 21 FEBRUARY 2022

According to the Bretton Woods institution, Togo is among the four non-fragile countries that have experienced a positive evolution (alongside Rwanda, Côte d’Ivoire and Guinea). The country even recorded a slight increase, bringing its overall score to 3.5 (3.3 in 2019), better than the regional average.

Concretely, Togo, described by the Bank as ‘a solid reformer among IDA countries in the region in recent years’, has made progress on issues of economic management, the public sector and institutions as well as structural policies, social inclusion and equity. Among other measures implemented, the program budget approach or the digitization of the tax administration.

In the table, Togo ranks 12th out of 39 at the regional level, and 7th out of 20, in West and Central Africa.

As a reminder, the CPIA is an annual diagnostic tool of the quality of the national political and institutional structures of the countries of sub-Saharan Africa as well as their capacity to support sustainable and inclusive growth.

Investing in the Europe-Africa partnership

On February 17 and 18, 2022 the 6th African Union – European Union Summit should be held in Brussels – the last one was held in 2017. Since taking office, the von der Leyen Commission has sought to make relations with the African continent a priority: for her first trip outside Europe, in December 2019, the President went to Addis Ababa, where the headquarters of the African Union is located. The February Summit will be an opportunity to act on this priority.

I invite you to read in its entirety this article by Thierry Déau, Chairman and CEO, Meridiam and Jean-Michel Huet, Partner, BearingPoint, both members of the Europe-Africa working group of the Institut Montaigne.
